NASA’s White Charger to the Rescue

Landing an ER-2, NASA’s long-winged, high-altitude Earth science aircraft, can be tricky. Its wings give the aircraft glider-like qualities, the aircraft is sensitive to crosswinds, and its ascent and descent rates are fast and steep. Even normal landings can be difficult for the pilot, encased in a full pressure suit. That’s where NASA’s recently acquired Dodge Charger safety chase car comes in.

BIKES ARE READY FOR PURCHASE NOW!

Kawasaki Motors Corp., U.S.A. is offering the Concours™ 14 ABS Police motorcycle to U.S. law enforcement agencies. Complete sales and support services are available through the company’s network of more than 1,100 U.S. motorcycle dealers. Kawasaki will provide post-sale warranty support as well as law enforcement maintenance personnel training. Police unit preparation will be handled through Beaudry Motors, Inc.

Concours 14 ABS Police motorcycles lead the segment in safety, acceleration, handling, and braking. All units are delivered with a tighter turning radius and custom law enforcement equipment, including: adjustable speedometer,
a second wiring harness with 12 fused circuits and a separate battery dedicated to the add-on electronics installed by Beaudry Motors, Inc. An extensive selection of emergency equipment is available to satisfy agency requirements.

More Capable:

The Concours 14 ABS provides significant competitive advantages for law enforcement agencies, compared to the police offerings from competing manufacturers.

• Advanced Traction Control.
• High-performance ABS brake system provides best-in-class braking.
• Quickest acceleration in the law enforcement class.
• Best high-speed handling in the law enforcement class.
• Heavy-duty 41.5 amp alternator.
• 503-pound payload capacity.
• Removable saddle bags.
• Tough and durable clutch is the least-expensive system to replace in the category.
• Three-year unlimited mileage factory warranty.
• Fleet service staff training, plus the authorization to conduct non-warranty
maintenance and repairs, on-site.
• Purchasing agencies may also take their vehicles to any Kawasaki motorcycle
dealer for regular maintenance, repairs, or warranty service.
Competitive Pricing:
• Turn-key retail costs vary from $18-$22,000 per unit, depending on model year and level of equipment options ordered.
• Taxpayers save more than $2,000 per-unit in initial acquisition cost, compared to comparably equipped BMW R1200RT-P or Harley Davidson FLHTP motorcycles.
• Depending on fleet size, total cost savings to communities, governments, and the taxpayers could rise to millions of dollars, once reduced maintenance and repair costs are factored-in.
• A complete clutch system replacement—one of the most frequent police unit maintenance needs—costs less than $400 in parts and labor. This represents a savings of several hundred dollars1, per occurrence, and could mean a savings of thousands of dollars over the life of each vehicle.

Kawasaki is clearly the right choice for law enforcement agencies. The Concours 14 ABS out-performs every other available unit in the category, and does it at a price sensitive to tight municipal budgets.

Drug Abuse Resistance Education (D.A.R.E.)

Drug Abuse Resistance Education, or D.A.R.E., is a drug abuse prevention education program designed to equip elementary school children with knowledge about drug abuse, the consequences of drug abuse, and skills for resisting peer pressure to experiment with drugs, alcohol, and tobacco.
D.A.R.E. uses uniformed law enforcement officers to teach a formal curriculum to students in a classroom setting. The Santa Clara Police Department Community began teaching the program in 1995. Today, Santa Clara’s D.A.R.E. program is taught at 17 public and private schools. The Elementary D.A.R.E. program targets every 5th grader and prepares them for entering junior high school, where pressures to use drugs and alcohol will most likely occur.

Meet our D.A.R.E. Officers!

Officer Tyson Green
Tyson joined the police department in 2002. He spent his the last three years working in the Field Operations Division patrolling the streets of Santa Clara. In 2005, he was selected as a DARE officer and successfully completed the DARE/ School Beat Officer training course. Tyson will begin instructing DARE in the local schools in the fall. Tyson is excited about his new responsibilities and is looking forward to interacting with the students, administrators and staff of the local schools.

In his spare time, Tyson enjoys professional auto races, playing softball, hiking and jet skiing. Tyson’s advise for our local youth…”Think before you act. Be kind to others and say no to drugs, alcohol and tobacco.”

Officer Davis
Officer Davis has been a police officer for sixteen years. His assignments have included patrol, investigations, and work as an undercover narcotics officer.

Officer Davis is currently assigned to the School Services Unit as a D.A.R.E. Instructor and a School Resource Officer. Officer Davis enjoys working with today’s youth and helping to guide them in a positive direction.

Officer Jensen
Bruce was hired in 1984. He has worked in the patrol division, as well as the traffic division, investigating hit and run accidents and fatal collisions. Bruce is currently a D.A.R.E. instructor and a School Resource Officer. Bruce’s favorite thing to do is "anything" with his family.
Personal Message: Kids need to be guided and mentored. We need to believe in them until they’re strong enough to believe in themselves. Remember, dream big, set goals, work hard and never let anyone steal your dreams.

Officer Jacob Malae

"Officer Jacob Malae has been a member of the Santa Clara Police Department since 1998. For the first several years of his career, Officer Malae worked as a patrol officer. In 2006, he joined the Services Division as a DARE Instructor/School Resource Officer. In 2007, he was honored as the department’s "Officer of the Year", and in 2009 was presented with the "Lifesaving Award". A native Santa Claran, and second generation Santa Clara police officer, Officer Malae takes pride in serving the community and local schools he grew up in.
In his spare time, Officer Malae enjoys spending time with his family, reading and coaching high school football. His advice to local youth…"A goal without a plan is a wish. Set goals and have a plan to achieve them with equal fervor."

Officer Johanna Green

Officer J. Green began her career in law enforcement as a police officer in Southern California. She joined the Santa Clara Police Department in 2007. She is delighted to have the opportunity to teach D.A.R.E because she is herself a former D.A.R.E graduate. Thus, she believes wholeheartedly in the positive impact the DARE program has on children and juveniles.
Officer J. Green spends her free time pursuing an advanced degree. She enjoys running, reading, writing, and traveling. Her advice to the youth of our community is:
“No matter what hardships or obstacles you encounter, do not forget your dreams and goals. Pursue them with a passion and know that you can accomplish anything if you give it your all and never give up. Make it YOUR life and live it DRUG-FREE.”

Officer Bob Henderson

Bob began his law enforcement career at the Stanford Department of Public Safety in 1992 and transferred to the Santa Clara Police Department in 2001. During the course of his career, he served primarily as a patrol officer where he investigated and enforced hundreds of crimes. He has taken a personal interest over the years in the enforcement of illegal drugs. He has received commendations from his supervisors and outside organizations such as the Optimist Club in Santa Clara and Mothers Against Drunk Driving. He is currently assigned to the Community Services Unit and is excited about his new position as a DARE officer where he is able to share his work experiences in an educational setting.

Bob’s advice for our youth…“Only a bad outcome can result from drug abuse and violence, as it robs one of their dignity, talents and is harmful to society. The betterment of the world can only be accomplished through properly educating ourselves and the conscious and sustained act of good deeds.:”

Code 3, Inc. announces their popular SuperVisor and WingMan products are now available with TriCore Technology.

Patented TriCore Technology, exclusive to Code 3, delivers more light output per watt than any other current halogen, strobe or LED lighthead. It is more than two times brighter than any other warning light available today.

SuperVisor is a low-profile interior light, contoured to fit against the upper interior of a windshield between the sun visors and glass. At only 2” tall, the SuperVisorblends in with the interior of the car and remains unseen until energized. A special housing prevents the lights from reflecting back into the driver’s eyes.

The WingMan is designed to fit in the rear window of patrol vehicles and is the perfect complement to the SuperVisor. Like the SuperVisor, it is just 2” tall, virtually undetectable from the outside and will not block the driver’s view of traffic.

Both SuperVisor and WingMan come in vehicle specific designs to provide a custom fit. Lightheads in the product can be independently wired in a variety of flash patterns. All TriCore modules are covered by a 5 year warranty and are available in red, blue, amber or white.

About Code 3, Inc.

Established in 1974, Code 3, Inc. designs and manufactures a complete line of emergency lighting and warning products for police, fire, emergency response, utility and industrial applications. Code 3, Inc. is a Public Safety Equipment Company.

12/30/09 – A technological advance by a Livingston County-based company is expected to save the Michigan State Police hundreds of thousands of dollars in the next few years. Whelen Engineering of Brighton developed new LED lights for use atop troopers patrol units that will replace the current incandescent lighting. It’s expected the new LED units, which will fit inside the existing overhead red beacon, will last ten years longer than the current bulbs. Combined with the fact that the new LED lights are essentially maintenance free and have no need for heavy-duty wiring and special switches, officials expect to save more than $220,000 over a four-year period. Patrol cars will be fitted with the new LED overhead light kits when there is a light failure. The LED lights will also be installed in the approximately 250 new patrol cars that come into service every year. (JK)

From The Arkansas Democrat Gazette
Northwest Arkansas Edition

New sirens shake ground to get drivers to pull over

BY JACOB QUINN SANDERS

Forced to share the road with newer vehicles that are engineered to cancel out road noise, and with drivers distracted by cell phones, iPods and bass pumping (sic)stereo systems, Little Rock police and firefighters are using a new kind of emergency siren that motorists can feel.

The siren, which the two departments demonstrated Wednesday, emits a lower, denser tone that’s reminiscent of 1980s hip-hop, as opposed to the shrieking whine that usually emits from racing fire and police vehicles.

The idea behind the new siren is that vibrations from its lower tones project along the ground and into the structures of vehicles, getting the drivers’ attention to help clear the road for city vehicles barreling toward emergencies.

Little Rock has spent $600,000 so far installing the device, called the Howler, on four Fire Department battalionchief (sic) vehicles and on 34 police cars, with plans to install hundreds more.

The Fire Department has tested the Howler on the road for the past three months.
